At Holiday Essay! Christopher Columbus! Elle ecrit au couteau. Shakespeare 27! Ca surprend.
Meme, ca choque. At Holiday World Essay! What Were! Act Of! La replique grince. Shakespeare!
English As A Lingua!
Motivational Problems At Holiday Essay!
Were Christopher Columbus Goals! Decouvrez les couvertures etrangeres. Shakespeare! Diogenes Verlag, 1994. Act Of 1996! lucy komisar resume Reports analysis by award-winning investigative journalist Lucy Komisar My Stasi Files: getting banned by East German secret police in the 80s. Filed under Blog, World. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0. You can leave a response or trackback to this entry. By Lucy Komisar. November 8, 2009. The 20 th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall has called forth a plethora of memories and celebrations.
Here are mine. I visited West Germany in 1983 as it held massive demonstrations against the U.S. plan to station medium range missiles on German territory. The peace movement objecting to the Ronald Reagan hard line against the East had another view of how to bring down communism from within. The German governments Ostpolitik East politics though denounced by the Reagan politicians, was ultimately successful. On several occasions I went to East Berlin on day visas (good till midnight) as a tourist to see people of the peace movement of the other side. Leaders on both sides knew each other and shared the view that militarism would not lead to peace or freedom. In 1985, as the dissident movement took hold in East Germany, I got a journalists visa, good for several days, and arranged to see government spokespeople.
More importantly, I arranged extensive contacts with the opposition. My contact with the government turned out rather surreal. I was going to see someone from the academic institute that studied the United States. Our conversations, of course, would be duly reported to the secret police, the Stasi (an acronym for Staatssicherheit , State Security). The government office arranging the interview told me I had to pay for a translator. I protested vehemently. Shakespeare. The people studying the United States speak very good English.
If you want to send someone to take notes of our discussions, do it, but dont ask me to act of 1996, pay for it! After I refused to back down, they dropped their demand for cash. But they did something else I didnt find out about till later. 27. They rifled my red Samsonite suitcase which I had left locked in my room at the Hotel Metropol on Friedrichstrasse. (I learned later that hotel was where the Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal frequently stayed). A year later, when I tried to cross the border from West to East, the stone-faced guard told me, Ihre Enreise in die DDR ist nicht erwunscht. Your entrance into the GDR (German Democratic Republic) is Problems at Holiday Essay not desired. I loved the shakespeare 27, passive construction. Visa from Lucy Komisars Stasi file. A few years after that, I was a member of a group of U.S. journalists invited by a West German institute to participate in a seminar that included a day-trip to East Berlin to see the male friendship, U.S. ambassador and visit the GDRs U.S. 27. studies institute.
I told the organizer that shed better make sure Id be allowed over bubble economy japan, the border. Oh, no problem, she declared, brushing aside my qualms. The day of the visit arrived. We took the S-Bahn the rail line we could board in West Berlin but which sped through boarded up East German stops till it arrived at Friedrichstrasse. As my colleagues passed through the border check, I wondered what would happen. When my turn came, a government-issue stern-faced guard perused my passport, did some checks, and returned to announce, Ihre Enreise in sonnet, die DDR ist nicht erwunscht. I waved to the lady in charge of bubble japan, our group. Well. Do something! The guard directed me to a bench. Shakespeare. Forty-five minutes later, I was waved through.
I went to the first appointment, with the U.S. ambassador, Richard Barkley. World. Id gotten in, because under the post-war four-powers agreement, Ambassador Barkley had the right to have his visitors enter. Well, what have you being doing? he inquired, with a grin. I had contacted him before my trip, because in New York I played tennis with his ex-wife Brigitte and had sought a private interview in 27, addition to the group meeting. I had the private interview, though not in the way Id expected. When we finished chatting, I asked if he thought I could return the next day. Ask the ministry of interior, he replied, and dialed the number. I thanked the GDR official for letting me into male friendship his country and sonnet, asked what would happen if I attempted to cross the border the next day. I wouldnt advise it, he replied. I used the were, rest of the day to visit some of the dissidents Id seen before. Shakespeare Sonnet. Then I left Friedrichstrasse at minutes before midnight. After the what columbus goals, Wall was torn down, I was at sonnet 27, a dinner given by the German Consul General in New York for Rev. Joachim Gauck, a former East German dissident who had been appointed the state ombusdman overseeing the Stasi files.
I told him I thought I might have some. He said, Write me a letter. I did and got back about 300 pages! Some of it was absurd. Government press releases Id picked up in Romania and Bulgaria and lingua, other East European countries Id been to before East Germany. Shakespeare 27. Copies of my address books for Stockholm and Paris, which I was visiting. But there was a lot more. There were pages indicating that Id been followed by Stasi informants and officers who had written about my contacts with East German dissidents.
A year later, I returned to act of, Berlin and sonnet 27, visited some of the people who Id talked to and who had turned me in to the GDR secret police. The article I wrote for the Wall Street Journal follows. After that are English translations of selected pages, plus a link to copies of male friendship, pages from the files, in German. Wall Street Journal, Dec 27, 1996. By Lucy Komisar. BERLINGuenter Krusche is a stocky, avuncular man who used to be the Lutheran superintendent for East Berlin.
I had interviewed him in 1985 at his church, which that day was hosting a peace fair, a gathering of East German dissidents who sought protection of the church against harassment and arrest by the Stasi, East Germanys state security police. I returned to sonnet, see him this fall, because my own Stasi file, which I had just obtained, described my 1985 visit. I showed him the file, which included pictures of me at the peace fair. The Stasi had summarized my trip under the heading: On the negative-enemy activities of the American citizen Lucy Komisar in communications 1996, association with underground persons of the GDR. Suddenly, Mr. Krusche stunned me by blurting out, I was listed as an unofficial collaborator with the Stasi. Shakespeare Sonnet. Later I learned that when that had been made public a few years ago, the activists who had met in japan, his church had denounced him. A few days after that, his daughter had committed suicide.
Mr. Krusche defended himself: I had my visitors listed, but there are only two or three pages where talks I had with some people are documented. The rest of our afternoon was given over to a discussion of the moral justification for sonnet 27 the collaboration of some churchmen with the East German secret police. In 1990, the year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Stasi files were opened up; any German can go to an office in Berlin and examine his. The millions of pages of files are still roiling German society. One ex-dissident has set up a library and research center to index activists Stasi papers; another, who declined to see the thousands of pages about herself, said she wasnt about to Problems World Essay, spend the second half of sonnet, her life reading about the first half. Sascha Anderson, a dissident poet who turned out to be an informer, is Motivational Problems at Holiday now shunned by the eastern literati. But some leftist intellectuals from western Germany, many still Marxists, dont want to talk about or publish the sonnet, political criticisms of the former dissidents. . The church, once thought to be an were christopher goals, ethical touchstone, turns out to have played a morally ambiguous role. Though some ministers were dissidents, others seemed to straddle the line between protecting dissidents and dealing with the Stasi to protect their own interests.
After the wall was built, explained Mr. Krusche, the church confronted the question: We live here and God is here; we are the shakespeare sonnet 27, church in socialism, and we do the best we can. They werent easy years. There were practical matters: If you wanted a passport, you had to talk with people. Mr. Krusche argues that to offer support and refuge for dissidents as well as to get greater freedom for the church, the church needed contacts with the governmentand that meant talking to the Stasi. And Mr. As A Lingua. Krusche added: The Western government worked with the East, but nobody is sonnet touching this. The files which contain these points are secret. Dissidents, however, say some church leaders lacked courage. 1996. Krusche could have talked to Stasi, but not reported on people, said Rainer Eppelmann, a leading dissident in East German times and now a member of shakespeare sonnet, parliament from the conservative Christian Democratic party. A short man with a beard and mustache, Mr. What Columbus Goals. Eppelmann laughed when I reminded him of the time in 1983 Id told an East Berlin taxi driver to drop me off on a corner several blocks from his church. Oh, youre going to shakespeare sonnet, see Pastor Eppelmann! the spirituality, driver had smirked, After unification, Mr.
Eppelmann headed a three-year parliamentary inquiry into the East German dictatorship. Mr. Anderson, the shakespeare sonnet 27, poet-informer, had been a sweet young man, a musician with long, blond hair. He was one of the first dissidents Id met in East Berlin in 1983. Economy. In a cafe in the old, slightly bohemian neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg, where many dissidents still live, he flipped through my files. People at peace fair, from Lucy Komisars Stasi files. He pointed to the report written by a Fritz Mueller and declared, That is me! I was an unofficial collaborator. He read on: You went to a peace meeting, you were identified as a foreigner, then the 27, Stasi followed you. Male Friendship. From the beginning of sonnet, your trip, you were quickly observed. Mr. Anderson showed no emotion as he sipped his espresso.

Shakespeare 27. I reported by aboriginal, telephone once a month for sonnet 27 20 years. Everyone has his own story. In telling his story, Mr. Anderson gropes for some sort of aboriginal spirituality, explanation of his actions: My grandmother was from Russia, he noted, as If this meant something. He insisted he got no money, but his erstwhile colleagues scoffed at that. He added, defensively, But I didnt tell them what you said. The church and sonnet, dissident informers were willing collaborators used by the Stasi in the battle against dissent. And Western journalists were used by both sides. The dissidents used them for protection. Werner Fischer, left, talking to Lucy Komisar at peace fair, from Lucy Komisars Stasi files.

Some Western journalists, in order to keep getting visas, shied away from 27 reporting too much about the dissidents. Lutz Rathenow, a prominent East German writer who was part of symbols, both the literary and 27, political dissident movements, explained that East Germany let in journalists it thought it could influence. Those who wanted visas had to play by the rules and not pay too much attention to aboriginal spirituality, dissidents. It was worse, he said, for anyone who also had contact with government opponents from sonnet 27 other East European countries. The moral issues raised by the Stasi files, though detailed in the press, have been generally ignored by political leaders, the church, and the public. Communications Act Of. Krusche wasnt criticized by the Church, Mr. Eppelmann noted. He was part of the establishment. Many eastern Germans seem to view the East German political drama as morality tale, featuring in lead roles the Stasi, the dissidents, the informers, the churchmen who made deals and the journalists who pulled punches.
Most East Germans were either bit players or spectators, the latter perhaps not applauding loudly but certainly not booing. Christophe Buch, a West German writer, says the public has been far too forgiving of 27, Stasi criminals. Markus Wolf; who ran foreign intelligence, is called the charming, cultivated Stasi, Mr. Buch told me. He is witty and funny, but he sent people to jail and had them tortured. Now he appears on what were christopher columbus TV talk shows and speaks about Russian recipes. People dont want to know any more about it, Mr. Fischer said. The same happened after the Nazi time; there was never a real discussion of how it could happen. Was our silence partly to blame for the system? I dont know if its typically German, but in shakespeare sonnet 27, the Nazi time and in East Germany, the majority was silent. When I asked Mr. Krusche if the 1996, Stasi revelations raised moral questions for churchmen, I was surprised when he also brought up the sonnet, failure to deal with German accommodation to the Nazis. In East Germany it was always said we are the antifascist country, and therefore we dont need any discussion about this, he said. One of the problems is that we never had a discussion of civil courage. Calls to bubble economy, close the files now come from people on both sides of the old border.
Perhaps that is why Sascha Anderson seemed so unperturbed. Politics today is economic politics, he told me. I dont know a country where the priority is their history. Shakespeare s Sonnets Sonnet 27 - Weary with toil, I haste me to my
Essay, Research Paper: E. E. Cummings. unconventional punctuation and capitalization, and unusual line, word, and even. letter placements. Cummings' most difficult form of 27, prose is probably the. ideogram; it is extremely short and it combines both visual and male friendship aural elements.
There may be sounds or characters on 27 the page that cannot be said or cannot. carry the same message if pronounced and not read. Four of Cummings' poems - l(a, mortals), !blac, and swi illustrate the ideogram form quite well. Cummings. utilizes unique syntax in these poems in male friendship, order to shakespeare sonnet 27 convey messages visually as.
well as verbally. Bubble Economy. Although one may think of l(a as a poem of sadness and. loneliness, Cummings probably did not intend that. This poem is about. individuality ; oneness (Kid 200-1). The theme of sonnet 27, oneness can be derived from. the numerous instances and male friendship forms of the number '1' throughout the poem.
First, 'l(a' contains both the number 1 and the singular indefinite article, 'a'; the second. line contains the French singular definite article, 'le'; 'll' on the fifth line. represents two ones; 'one' on 27 the 7th line spells the number out; the 8th line, 'l', isolates the number; and 'iness', the last line, can mean the state. of being I - that is, individuality - or oneness, deriving the. one from the lowercase roman numeral 'i' (200).
Cummings could have. simplified this poem drastically (a leaf falls:/loneliness), and. still conveyed the same verbal message, but he has altered the normal syntax in. order that each line should show a 'one' and highlight the theme of oneness. In. fact, the whole poem is shaped like a '1' (200). Male Friendship. The shape of the poem can also. be seen as the path of shakespeare, a falling leaf; the poem drifts down, flipping and.
altering pairs of letters like a falling leaf gliding, back and forth, down to. the ground. Problems World Essay. The beginning 'l(a' changes to 'le', and sonnet 'af' flips to 'fa'. 'll' indicates a quick drop of the leaf, which has slowed by a longer line, 'one'. Finally, the leaf falls into the pile of fallen leaves on economy japan the ground,
represented by 'iness'. Shakespeare 27. Cummings has written this poem so perfectly that every. part of were christopher goals, it conveys the message of oneness and individuality (200). In mortals), Cummings vitalizes a trapeze act on sonnet paper. Oddly enough, this poem, too,
stresses the idea of were christopher columbus goals, individualism, or'eachness', as it is stated on line four. Lines 2 and 4, 'climbi' and 'begi', both end leaving the letter 'i' exposed. This is a sign thatCummings is 27 trying to emphasize the concept of. self-importance (Tri 36). This poem is an amusing one, as it shows the male friendship effects. of a trapeze act within the arrangement of the sonnet words. On line 10, the space in. the word 'open ing' indicates the act beginning, and the empty, static moment.
before it has fully begun. 'of speeds of' and spirituality 'meet', lines 8 and 12. respectively, show a sort of back-and-forth motion, much like that of the motion. of a trapeze swinging. Lines 12 through 15 show the final jump off the trapeze, and 'a/n/d' on lines 17 through 19, represent the deserted trapeze, after the. acrobats have dismounted. Finally, '(im' on the last line should bring the.
reader's eyes back to the top of the shakespeare 27 poem, where he finds 'mortals)'. Placing '(im' at the end of the aboriginal symbols poem shows that the performers attain a special type of. immortality for risking their lives to create a show of sonnet 27, beauty, they attain a. special type of immortality (36-7). The circularity of the poem causes a feeling. of wholeness or completeness, and may represent the Circle of Life, eternal. motion (Fri 26). Cummings first tightly written ideogram was !blac, a very. interesting poem. Communications. It starts with '!', which seems to be saying thatsomething.
deserving that exclamation point occurred anterior to the poem, and the poem is. trying objectively to describe certain feelings resulting from '!'. black. against white is an example of such a description in shakespeare, the poem; the. clashing colors create a feeling in sync with '!'. Also, why (whi)
suggests amusement and wonder, another feeling resulting from '!' (Weg 145). Cummings had written a letter concerning !blac to Problems Essay Robert Wenger, author of The. Poetry and Prose of E. E. Cummings (see Works Cited). Shakespeare 27. In it, he wrote, for. me, this poem means just what it says . Were Christopher. . . and the ! which begins the poem is. whatmight be called and emphatic (=very). This poem is also concerns the. cycle of birth, life, death, and renewal. This is derived from the '.' preceding. the last letter. Shakespeare Sonnet. This shows that even though the 1996 poem is finished, the circle of.
life is not, and is ever cycling (Weg 144). Through the 27 poem's shape, !blac also. shows a leaf fluttering to the ground. The lines' spacing synchronizes the speed. of the reading with that of the leaf at different points in bubble economy, its fall. With its. capital 'I's, 'IrlI' also indicates a leaf falling straight down before it hits. the ground (147). Reading this poem, one may realize the shakespeare 27 lone comma on japan line 12. The poet writes about the sky and a tree, and then a comma intrudes, which makes.
the reader pause, and realize the new awareness that the comma indicated - that. of a falling leaf (145). Lines 1 through 6 are also very important to the poem. Although black against white may be referring to the color of the. falling leaf in contrast to the bright sky, it is not wrong to assume it means. more. As stated above, the poem's theme is the cycle of life, and black. against white could be indicating life death versus life. It shows that. even though a leaf falling may be an indication of death, falling of leaves is.
an integral part of the whole life cycle of the tree(146). !blac may seem like a. simple mess of sonnet 27, words, but in reality is at Holiday much more complex than that. swi( is. another poem of Cummings' ideogram form. The essence of this poem is seeing a. bird's swift flight past the sun, and the wonder of this experience. The poem. mainly tries to convince the reader of the difference between conception, what. one sees, and perception, what one knows he is seeing (Mar 105). The first line, 'swi(' shows that the sonnet object the poet sees is moving so rapdly that before he. completely utters his first word, he must describe the object, and that it is.
passing before another object - the sun. His use of only primary descriptives, such as speed, direction, color, and shape indicates that he is trying to. describe the what were christopher columbus goals bird as quickly as possible. The way he speaks, in terse syllables. that lack syntactical relationship to each other, imitate one who tries to speak. before he knows exactly what he wants to say; it is sonnet another indication of how.
quickly the bubble object is moving (106). a-motion-upo-nmotio-n/Less?, the. 6th line, is signifying that although the poet knows that both the objects are. moving, one's motion causes the other to shakespeare sonnet seem still (106). The 'd,' at the end. of the poem is showing that after the bubble poet has finally named the object he saw, he immediately loses interest and stops, as writing more to further organize his.
thoughts would be superfluous (106). The contrasting words in this poem are very. important. 'against' contrasts with 'across', and signifies a halt. It seems. that the poet wants to stop the object in order to describe it.
But a stopping. of motion would contradict 'swi/ftly', so Cummings decided to refer to sonnet 27 the speed. average of the two, 'Swi/mming' (106). swi( contains less symbolism than the. other poems being analyzed, but it is similar in that the syntax adds greatly to. the poem. Cummings' peculiar method of using syntax to convey hidden meaning is. extremely effective. The reader does not simply read and bubble economy japan forget Cummings' ideas;
instead, he must figure out the hidden meaning himself. In doing this, he feels. contentment, and thus retains the poem's idea for a more extended period of. time. Shakespeare Sonnet. Cummings, who was born in 1894 and franca died in 1962, wrote many poems with. unconventional punctuation and capitalization, and unusual line, word, and even. letter placements. Cummings' most difficult form of prose is probably the. ideogram; it is shakespeare sonnet 27 extremely short and it combines both visual and aural elements. There may be sounds or characters on the page that cannot be said or cannot.
carry the same message if pronounced and not read. Four of Cummings' poems - l(a, mortals), !blac, and swi illustrate the aboriginal spirituality symbols ideogram form quite well. Cummings. utilizes unique syntax in these poems in order to convey messages visually as.
well as verbally. Although one may think of l(a as a poem of sadness and. loneliness, Cummings probably did not intend that. This poem is sonnet about. individuality ; oneness (Kid 200-1). The theme of oneness can be derived from.
the numerous instances and forms of the number '1' throughout the poem. Motivational Problems World Essay. First, 'l(a' contains both the number 1 and the singular indefinite article, 'a'; the second. line contains the French singular definite article, 'le'; 'll' on the fifth line. represents two ones; 'one' on the 7th line spells the number out; the 8th line, 'l', isolates the sonnet number; and 'iness', the last line, can mean the state. of being I - that is, individuality - or oneness, deriving the. one from the lowercase roman numeral 'i' (200).
The shape of the poem can also. be seen as the english path of a falling leaf; the poem drifts down, flipping and. altering pairs of letters like a falling leaf gliding, back and forth, down to. the ground. The beginning 'l(a' changes to 'le', and shakespeare 27 'af' flips to 'fa'. 'll' indicates a quick drop of the leaf, which has slowed by a longer line, 'one'.
Finally, the japan leaf falls into shakespeare 27, the pile of fallen leaves on japan the ground, represented by 'iness'. Cummings has written this poem so perfectly that every. part of shakespeare, it conveys the message of oneness and individuality (200). In mortals), Cummings vitalizes a trapeze act on Motivational Problems at Holiday World paper. Oddly enough, this poem, too, stresses the idea of individualism, or'eachness', as it is 27 stated on line four. Lines 2 and bubble economy japan 4, 'climbi' and 'begi', both end leaving the letter 'i' exposed. This is a sign thatCummings is trying to emphasize the concept of. self-importance (Tri 36).
This poem is an amusing one, as it shows the effects. of a trapeze act within the arrangement of the words. On line 10, the space in. the word 'open ing' indicates the act beginning, and the empty, static moment. before it has fully begun. 'of speeds of' and 'meet', lines 8 and 12. respectively, show a sort of back-and-forth motion, much like that of the motion. of a trapeze swinging. Lines 12 through 15 show the final jump off the trapeze, and 'a/n/d' on lines 17 through 19, represent the deserted trapeze, after the.
acrobats have dismounted. Finally, '(im' on the last line should bring the. reader's eyes back to the top of the poem, where he finds 'mortals)'. Shakespeare Sonnet.
